Yuka passed away today
It is with deep regret that I must inform you of my older sister, Yuka Yamamoto's passing this morning.
She worked at NIHONGO GYM as a Japanese teacher for a while
about three years ago before she got pregnant with her second son.

Please come and say goodbye to Yuka at either or both occasions below.
Or you can just leave a message on this site.

She was diagnosed as liver cancer about three months ago
but battling with cancer and keeping up hope to live as long as possible, especially for her two sons, Tao and Iki.

However, suddenly this week Monday on 11th, she became very ill.
This morning, family and close friends visited the hospital to say goodbye to her.
A little after everyone arrived at her hospital room she took her last breath peacefully.
It was like she was waiting for everyone to be present.

Speech Contest 2009 in Hakodate, Hokkaido
It's been a while since I posted my last blog entry.
It's a long story, but I won't make excuses here.

Well, I've got a newsletter from Japan Foundation.
The anual Speech Contest will be held in Hokkaido this year.
If you are selected to the best 12 contestants who will do the speech there,
the transportation to Hokkaido and the accomodation fees will be provided.
Also, the contest will be shown on NHK TV.
Why don't you try? JUST a 7 minute talk!
The deadline is 9th, April.

Here is a part of the essential information:

1. Date & Place
Saturday, May 30, 2009 (from 1:30 p.m.)
Hakodate City Civic Auditorium
1-32-1 Yunokawa-cho, Hakodate, Hokkaido
2. Subject & Time Limit
Any non-commercial, non-religious topic
Time limit : 7 minutes
There will be a Question/Answer period immediately
following each speech.
3. Qualifications
Applicants must fulfill all of the following conditions:
1) native language other than Japanese
2) 15 years of age or older on the contest day
3) not having won the 1st Prize, the Foreign Minister's
Award, or the Education Minister's Award in a
previous contest.

講師のご紹介
ジョン・ヘイグ教授は、1978年、ハーバード大学にて日本語言語学を専門とし博士号取得。1989年、ハワイ大学マノアにてMBA取得。1976年以来、ハワイに在住しハワイ大学で教鞭を取る。また日本でも名古屋大学、山形大学、神戸大学、甲南大学で教壇に立つ。1997年には、7000漢字を収録した「ニューネルソン漢英辞典」の最新版を編集者として出版。日本語の長編小説も読みこなす。趣味はヨット。2002年には、NHK朝の連続テレビ小説「さくら」に、ハワイ大学の講義シーンで教授役として出演。

“A Kanji Authority Looks at Japan and the World of Kanji.”

NIHONGO GYM Japanese School is proud to be hosting this special lecture by Dr. John Haig, an associate professor of the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Dr. Haig will be speaking in English and Japanese on the advantages and intricacies of kanji as well as his interesting experiences in and about Japan. This will be a great opportunity for learners of Japanese to get an insight into, not only how to study kanji, but also into learning the Japanese language and culture. For native Japanese, the lecture may help you to rediscover the wonders of your own language and culture.

●Lecturer
Dr. John Haig received his PhD in Japanese Linguistics from Harvard University in 1978 and an MBA from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1989. He has been teaching at the University of Hawaii since 1976 and has also taught at Nagoya University, Yamagata University, Kobe University, and Konan University. Dr. Haig was also the chief editor for the latest edition of the New Nelson Kanji English Dictionary which was published in 1997. He is an avid sailing enthusiast and is also very much into reading lengthy Japanese novels.
